Philosophy of Learning Design
Digital online learning has quickly become the learning space of the 21st Century. Before Covid-19, there were approximately 16.8 million students enrolled in degree-granting post-secondary programs (NCES, 2017). Out of that number, there were 6,651,536 students enrolled in distance learning education (NCES, 2017). That is, almost 40% of the students enrolled in the degree-granting post-secondary program are online learners in the U.S. alone. Since March of 2020, there are even more people utilizing online learning. 98% of institutions moved from face to face to online learning. (Bastrikin, 2020)
What makes the online experience relevant to today’s learners? In the words of Alvin Toffler (1970), “The illiterate of the 21st Century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” What online education affords a learner is a place in which they can explore the material at their own pace, through examination and reexamination with sufficient feedback and guidance. While at the same time allowing for exploration and influence from the environment from which they are located. Then integrate that with others from very different backgrounds and ways of seeing the world. Students in the 21st Century learns through discovering new material based on their prior knowledge and reflecting on the latest information they have learned.
